Our story
The Knizat Family began farming grapes in Niagara-on-the-Lake in 2001. This unique location on the shores of Lake Ontario allows us to produce Icewine juice from our vineyards that cannot be attained almost anywhere else in the world.
Icewines from pressed grapes from the Knizat Farm vineyards have been successfully sold all over the world for two decades.
More than fifteen years of experience in growing and harvesting grapes in the harshest conditions of the Canadian winters provides a guarantee of tasty and quality Icewines.
Buffalo hunters used to roam our lands, relying on buffalo for their survival. As they hunted the animal, not a single scrap would go to waste.
They consumed the meat to stay nourished, used the furs to keep clothed, and created tools from bones that helped them build their nomadic villages and keep hunting for more game.
This land, with its rich history, became inhabited with immigrants who started farming these lands by planting grain.
We are their successors; we, who fell in love with the grape growing lifestyle. Today, while exploring the charms of our farm land, it is not completely uncommon to find an arrowhead; a beautiful reminder of the predecessors of these lands. Even though centuries have passed, this idea of frugality that the buffalo hunters used so well has persevered in our viticultural practices. This is how the idea of “Buffalo Hunter” came to life.
This unique location on the shores of Lake Ontario allows us to produce Icewine juice from our vineyards that cannot be attained almost anywhere else in the world. The vineyards are protected from frost damage due to the lake effect.
At the same time, Northern winds bring us the necessary low temperatures that allow the grapes to freeze right before harvest and yield their “liquid gold”. Hence, Icewine is the reward we get to enjoy for our year-round hard work.
